One Month Until THIS IS BODY GRIEF; Making Peace With The Loss That Comes With Living In a Body, is out in the world!
It’s almost here. In just one month, This is Body Grief will be out in the world, and I can’t wait for you to read it.
This book is deeply personal, but it’s also a conversation we need to be having—because so many of us are living with some form of Body Grief. Maybe your body doesn’t move the way it used to. Maybe an illness has rewritten your sense of self. Maybe you don’t feel at home in your own skin. That loss, that frustration, that mourning for what once was or what could have been—that’s Body Grief. And it’s real.
This book isn’t about “overcoming” that grief. It’s about making space for it, acknowledging its weight, and learning how to exist alongside it without letting it define us. Because while Body Grief doesn’t disappear, it does lose its power when we stop fighting it and start listening to what it’s trying to tell us.
I wrote This is Body Grief because I needed it, and I know I’m not alone. If you’ve ever felt at odds with your body, if you’ve ever struggled to reconcile who you are with what your body allows you to do, this book is for you.
I’m so honored by the early words of praise for this book:
“We all need an opportunity to sit gently and thoughtfully with our grief. Consider this book your invitation.”
—Rachel Cargle, author of A Renaissance of Her Own"In a world that teaches us to ignore, control, or conquer our bodies, Jayne Mattingly intervenes with a much-needed revision to the default framework. Through her own hard-earned wisdom and professional expertise, she offers us language and tools to mend the fractured relationships we’ve developed with our own bodies. She guides us—gently, powerfully, and tangibly—through the process of building a sturdy home within the only bodies we’ll ever have—a desperately needed map for every single one of us."
—Rebekah Taussig, PhD, author of Sitting Pretty"I laughed, I cried, and I related all while reading This Is Body Grief. Jayne beautifully articulates the universal feeling of Body Grief and explores it on both macro and micro levels. It is the perfect blend of informative and vulnerable."
—Jacqueline Child, co-founder of Dateability"As a Black disabled woman, Body Grief is my daily story. Mattingly reminds us that 'without storytelling there is no healing,' validating why it is important to listen to the stories our bodies tell us. Read this book to heal in your own way. To be angry. To share. To accept. To celebrate and to love your body unconditionally amongst the continuous grief it brings."
—Dr. Akilah Cadet, MPH, author of White Supremacy Is All Around"Beautifully written and unapologetically honest, This Is Body Grief not only dismantles the false narrative that our bodies are against us, but offers a compassionate path through the messy landscape of grief turned inwards. This book is for anyone who’s ever felt uncomfortable in their own skin and wants to reclaim their sense of self."
—Ciera Rogers, founder of Babes and author of The Outsider Advantage
Why Pre-Ordering Matters
If you’re excited about this book, I’d love for you to consider pre-ordering it. Pre-orders are so important for authors—especially debut ones like me! They signal to publishers that this book matters, help get it into more stores, and ultimately ensure it reaches the people who need it most.
Plus, pre-ordering guarantees that This is Body Grief lands in your hands the moment it’s released. You’ll be among the very first to dive in, reflect, and start making space for your own journey through Body Grief.
One more month. I’ll be sharing more soon, but for now, I just want to say thank you. For listening, for being here, for making space for this conversation.
We’re in this together.
